The Collaborative Research Events on the Web (CREW) initiative, led by Michael Daw and a dedicated team across various institutions, is focused on supporting and enhancing the research process through effective online collaboration. This effort, part of the JISC Virtual Research Environment Programme, emphasized training events, user engagement, and the development of tools for better communication and resource sharing among researchers. Insights from events such as the ESRC Research Methods Festival illustrate the importance of advancing technology to address varied user needs while considering ethical and legal implications.

Outstanding Issues • How to expose the contents of research collaborations – search mechanisms (Google?!) • Accommodating differing user requirements, e.g. concerning security (to portal or not to portal) • Prioritising user requirements • Development challenges: • Converting audio/video to web-accessible • Editing to single stream • Consistent ontology between old projects Iugo & Memetic • Social, legal & ethical issues • Institutional embedding
