Reflective Piece Overview • Analyze what you have learned about journalism using specific examples from your own work in this class, feedback you have received, and our study of professional journalism. • This piece is a reflection of YOU. If you have problems with ME use another forum to address them.

  3. Requirements • Typing format: 12 point Times New Roman, double spaced, 1 inch margins • Length: 1.5 to 2.5 pages

  4. Getting Started • This essay is about your experience in journalism—make it sound like you • Start with an image from something we’ve read, done or watched in class • You can start with how you used to view journalism or a fact that startled you • Use “I”

  5. What did you learn from the Informational packets Be brief, but not overly general. Refer to the packets and your notes! • Hard news • Features • Profiles What do all of these have in common? What is unique about each?

  6. What did you learn about Journalism through your own writing? • Sum up: What are two significant techniques used in print journalism (magazines and newspapers) that you learned about this semester, through your own writing and feedback you received?

  7. Using your two examples of print journalism techniques For each technique, (you picked two) use and explain a specific example from: • A piece you wrote this semester • Feedback you received • A revision you made (These could all be part of the same example and explanation for each technique. )

  8. Attribution: Using & Citing Sources • Review the webpage from my site called “Attribution” and summarize why it is important to use and cite your sources. • Pick an example from one of your pieces where you have correctly attributed information from a source. Quote and explain your attribution.

  9. Our study of the professionals • We also learned about print (and briefly, broadcast) journalism, as well as advertising techniques, by studying the professionals

  10. Some texts we studied • Numerous examples of hard news, profiles, feature articles • A Few examples of broadcast news • Magazine Ads and a schema for analysis • Influences of the media (the powerpoint alphabet)

  11. What did you learn through studying the professionals? Give two examples of what you learned through the professional examples we studied: • One aspects of print journalism • One from advertising

  12. Explain and analyze each of the two professional examples • For each aspect of journalism you learned about through the professional examples, use and explain a specific example from a specific news story we read in class, an advertisement, or other example from class .

  13. The role of larger influences on journalists and news outlets • We’ve spoken about what happens in the real world of journalism and what journalists are ideally supposed to do. In your opinion, what should or shouldn’t be done in journalism? Give an example and explain why.

  14. Broadcast versus Print News • How does broadcast news differ from print news? • Why is this important? • Refer specifically to how broadcast news is constructed • How will this analysis affect the way you get your news or view the news in the future (or not)? Why?

  15. Outside Influences? • Briefly explain the pressures exerted on news organizations (from class discussions) • How does advertising fit into the field of journalism? • How will your analysis of ads change or not change the way you look at advertising and persuasive techniques? Why?

  16. Your experience as a whole • What did you find most useful in this class? Least? • What are some other cool ideas (possible in this setting) that you’d like to see happen in Journalism class? • Answer why for all these questions.
