  1. Simley EMR and EMT Program

  2. Emergency Medical Responder • Started in the Fall of the 2013-2014 school year with 3 one hour classes of “Emergency Medical Responder” (Classes of 27,25 and 23 or a total of 75 students enrolled) • Successful EMR certification for (22,24 and 22 students or a total of 68 students) • 68 students hold their AHA CPR/AED cards and EMR certification

  3. Emergency Medical Technician • 21 students signed up for this college level EMT course. • The EMT class was offered 6th and 7th hours in a non-stop two hours daily from December 2013 –June 2014. • At present time, 17 students remain and all have passed their National Registry Practical skills testing on Trauma Assessment, Medical Assessment, BVM on apneic patient, Oxygen administration, CPR/AED, Spinal immobilization and Ked boarding. • The 17 students in the program are committed and determined to pass their Written National Registry test.

  4. EMT Responsibilities • An EMT will be involved in assessing the people who require medical care while managing cardiac, respiratory, medical and trauma emergencies. • An EMT will continue patient care in the ambulance while en route to a hospital and does this under the direction of a medical director. • EMTs and Paramedics typically work in teams. Following protocols and EMS guidelines, they work together to provide patients with the medical treatment needed.

  5. EMT Responsibilities (cont) • EMTs transport patients to a medical facility and transfer care to the emergency department. They provide the emergency staff a full report of their observations and any treatment they provided. • Once their ambulance run has completed, the EMTs will check, store, and replace their equipment and supplies that were used during the course of the emergency. EMTs decontaminate their ambulance and report any contagious diseases to the appropriate authorities. • EMTs need to respond appropriately and quickly, correctly applying what they learned in class to the real-life emergency, regardless of how stressful the situation may be.

  6. General Career Opportunities • 50% of the EMT workforce works for ambulance services. • 30% work for local governments • 20% work in hospitals. • EMT certification in the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) is a prerequisite for these jobs and is a stepping stone for other more advanced jobs.

  7. Specific Career Opportunities • EMTs work for private or commercial ambulance services. • EMTs work in the oil/gas industries in an offshore position. • EMTs work for a security companies providing security and EMT services combined, for example in residential communities, on college campuses, or in casinos. • EMT Hospital Technicians • EMT positions can be a springboard into other opportunities in public safety, Advanced EMT, Paramedics, Nursing and the Medical field.

  8. What happens next? • The 17 students will be taking the FISDAP test this Friday, this will indicate how they will perform on the National registry test. They have 2 opportunities to take this test. If students require a second test they will contact Walsh to proctor over the summer. • The students can/have registered (need to be 18 years old) with the EMSRB to schedule a National registry written test. They will pay, take the test and notify Walsh with their passing results. • Next year 64 students have signed up to take the EMR classes, and 27 have signed up to take the EMT class. • Total of 91 students will be taking EMR/EMT next year.

  9. Thank Yous! • We would like to thank the board for their continuous support, academically and financially! We would not be able to offer a program of this magnitude without your overriding support! • We were able to purchase uniforms and patches, travel to the Hennepin county Simulation lab, purchase training equipment, curriculum books and next week we will go rappelling at the White Bear Lake fire department to establish our safety techniques. • We could not have done this without the outstanding direction of Joe Grafft and his team. Their training techniques have been invaluable to all involved within this worthwhile EMT Program. His knowledge and support was amazing and we all appreciate him!
