Communication… • E-mail is best mode of communication • Long-term assignments (ex: solar journal) • Upcoming assessments to help narrow the studying process • Missed homework assignment(s) • Recess: not showing up when expected to • At times, students may email home regarding a behavior choice

  3. Extra help opportunities… 1. Morning time – 9:10 to 9:25 2. *Start to think of recess as the “RA” period for middle school*… • Error correction with homework • Extra help with inclusion classes • Study time for upcoming test • Owed time for behavior choices or unfinished classwork

  4. Writing opportunities. . . • Writer’s Notebook: seeds, stories and strategies • Narrative (ex: memoir) and argumentative (ex: pro vs con) • Elementary Performance Assessment (EPA): research-based and informational

  5. A Writer’s Notebook “A writer’s notebook works just like an incubator: a protective place to keep your infant idea warm, a place to grow while it is too young, too new, to survive on its own. In time you may decide to go back to that idea, add to it, change it, or combine with another idea” Ralph Fletcher 1996

  7. Resource Room Language Arts . . . • The Daily 5… -Read to Self -Read to Someone -Writing -Word Work -Listen to Reading • Collections program: new to 6th grade this year • Passageways: non-fiction comprehension tool

  8. Resource Room homework • Math-nightly (except Fridays or if there is an assessment) • Reading nightly expectations… -20 to 30 minutes a night -Log their reading -Fill-in their Book Check orReaction Wall

Specially Designed Instruction (SDIs)... • Supplemental notes are offered • “Math tips” for inclusionmath classes • Binders: organized into sections and pages are numbered • 2nd optional study guide for social studies and science if advocated by student to Mr. Kohler • Check-ins: (reading, writing, hwk book, etc.) per IEP

  10. Other information… • IEPs serve as the guide to course recommendations and the transition process to middle school • Restorative Practice philosophy when working through social conflicts • “Taking Time” area…everyone needs a break sometimes

  11. Last but not least… • Just a “regular dude”… • My two daughters have changed me forever… • Being a good male role model is very important to me… • No one is perfect, mistakes are for learning… • I will try my best daily with your “precious cargo”… • Work as a PARTNERSHIP!
