What is the New Hermeneutic? • Hermeneutics – “the science of interpretation” • The goal is to determine what the actual meaning of a text is • Our goal is to return to the “old paths” Jeremiah 6:16
What is the New Hermeneutic? • The New Hermeneutic – a newer method of interpreting and applying scriptures subjectively • The “old hermeneutics” is CENI and objectivity • Claims CENI was introduced by Alexander Campbell – consider this morning’s lesson
Tenets of the New Hermeneutic? • Rejecting NT as a blueprint or pattern • Rejecting approved examples and necessary inference • Accepting silence as permissive • New Testament is a set of “love letters” rather than a constitution • Using logic and reason are not necessary for interpretation (subjective) • We should not claim absolute authority
Is New Hermeneutic Scriptural? • NO! It DOES matter what we believe • God has communicated His will to us – Heb. 1:1-2, 1 Cor. 2:12-16, Eph. 3:1-4We can understand it! Matt. 7:21-23, Jas. 1:22
Is New Hermeneutic Scriptural? • There is a pattern! • 2 Tim. 1:13 • Hebrews 8:5 Writer’s point is to demonstrate how important a pattern is to God
Is New Hermeneutic Scriptural? • Approved examples and necessary inference are approved methods • Philippians 3:17 • 1 Timothy 1:16 • Jesus and apostles used NI
Is New Hermeneutic Scriptural? • Is silence a valid form of authority • NO! • 1 Corinthians 4:6 2 John 9
Is New Hermeneutic Scriptural? • Is the New Testament just a set of “love letters” • While all that God has done is based on love, He calls for obedience. • Hebrews 8:6 – a better covenant • Hebrews 2:1-3, 12:24-25 • How do we love – John 14:15, 1 John 5:3
Is New Hermeneutic Scriptural? • Should we use an objective standard (logic and reason) to establish authority? • 2 Tim. 2:15 – rightly divide the word of truth • Romans 16:17 – note those that cause division • 2 Thess. 2:15, Hold the tradition 2 Thess. 3:14, note that person
Is New Hermeneutic Scriptural? • Can we absolutely know the truth? • Ephesians 3:3-4 – scripture written so that we can know • Ephesians 5:17 – understand what the will of the Lord is • John 8:31-32, you shall know the truth • 2 Tim. 3:14-15, scriptures make you wise unto salvation
Why New Hermeneutic is Wrong • It rejects the importance of patterns in scripture • Tends to subjectivism – anything goes • It questions the all sufficiency of scripture and leads to confusion
Why New Hermeneutic is Wrong • It can also lead to immorality and its tolerance in the church • Where do we stop??? • It undermines the unity of scripture – it produces pseudo-unity
Why New Hermeneutic is Wrong • The purpose of the new hermeneutic – to broaden the boundaries of scriptural permissiveness • In essence – when men cannot dismiss the appeals of logical Biblical patterns they have to introduce a new method of interpretation
Why New Hermeneutic is Wrong • BUT, it is not really new! • It is modernism repackaged! • The advocates of the NH, use logic, patterns and examples to justify their teaching • 2 Peter 2:18-19
In all we do… Let us respect God’s pattern!
