  1. By his Wounds we are healed But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 52:13-53:12 Key Verse: 53:5

  2. Background • Time: After 701 B.C (Isa 36). • Context: Promise from Isa 40 of return from exile. • Titles: • "Suffering Servant" • Fourth "Servant Song"

  3. Overview:

  4. Isa 52:13 See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.

  5. Isa 52:14 Just as there were many who were appalled at him -- his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness --

  6. Isa 52:15 so will he sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand.

  7. Isa 53:1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

  8. Isa 53:1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? revealed Revelation

  9. Faith is by Revelation • Mat 16:17 Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. • Mat 11:27 "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. • 2Pe 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours: • Act 13:48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. • Heb12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecterof our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. • Php 1:29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him, • 1Cor 2:10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. • 1Th 1:4-5 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.

  10. Isa 53:1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? Isa 59:16 He saw that there was no one, he was appalled that there was no one to intervene; so his own arm worked salvation for him, and his own righteousness sustained him. Isa 52:10 The LORD will lay bare his holy arm in the sight of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God.

  11. Naturalistic reasons for rejection • Isa 53:2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. • Isa 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

  12. middle stanza

  13. Isa 53:4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.

  18. Isa 53:7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. Isa 53:8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken. Isa 53:9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.

  19. Final Stanza

  20. Isa 53:10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.
