  1. Six Strategies for Success on the (Algebra 1) CRT Joleigh Honey Christina Eischeid

  2. Six Strategies for Success • The Essentials • Scaffold Learning • Maximize Instructional Time • Make Connections • Make it Solid • Utilize Resources

  3. The Essentials: Tier 1 Instruction • Never leave the big ideas! • Numbers: order, simplify, classify (rational or irrational) • Expressions and Equations: simplify/evaluate/solve • Linear relationships (More than 50% of Core): slope/equations/representations/systems • Polynomials: Simplify, factor, solve quadratics • Implement Eight Mathematical Practice Standards • Tasks with multiple entry points (Differentiation) • Formative Assessment (continuously check for understanding)

  4. Scaffold Learning • Warm-ups • 2 never leave behind • 2 current as review • 2 ‘know flat’ that prepares for future content • Quick Draws • “Sneaking” content in • Topics (exponents, radicals, number sense)

  5. Never leave the big ideas • Numbers: order, simplify, classify (rational or irrational) • Place points on a number line or order them from least to greatest • lies between which two whole numbers? • Classify numbers as rational or irrational • Compute and estimate solutions • Expressions and Equations: Simplify/evaluate/solve • Linear relationships (More than 50% of Core): slope/equations/representations/systems • Polynomials:Simplify, factor, solve quadratics • Simplify polynomials: • Simplify monomials • Solve basic quadratics: 9=0

  6. Quick Activities • Quick Activities • Obj. 1.1 Represent real numbers on the number line and distinguish rational numbers from irrational numbers. • Obj. 1.2 Compute fluently and make reasonable estimates with rational and irrational numbers.

  7. Quick Activities

  8. Maximize Instructional Time • Warm-Ups • Quick Draws • Quick Activities • Student Engagement and Motivation • Content focused tasks

  9. Secondary I/Algebra 1 Alignment • All Algebra 1 objectives are covered in Secondary I except the following: • 1.1 Represent real numbers as points on the number line and distinguish rational numbers from irrational numbers. • 1.2 Compute fluently and make reasonable estimates with rational and irrational numbers. • 3.1 Simplify polynomials and the quotient of monomials. • 3.4 Factor polynomials with common monomial factors and factor simple quadratic expressions. • 3.5 Solve quadratic equations using factoring or by taking square roots.

  10. Make Connections • Multiple Representations • Connections Between Representations • Connections Between Objectives • Application

  11. Make It Solid • Reviewing • Not re-teaching • Formally from good to great • Solidifying understanding • Test-taking strategies • Gaining confidence and promoting students as mathematicians • Motivation

  12. Utilize Resources • Utips • Reference sheets • USOE Sample Problems • Calculators

  13. Six Strategies for Success • The Essentials • Scaffold Learning • Maximize Instructional Time • Make Connections • Make it Solid • Utilize Resources
