  2. National Bioethics Committee • NBC constituted by PMRC, approved by MoH and Gazette notified in 2004 • PMRC is the Secretariat for National Bioethics Committee, Pakistan • Organized a National Workshop on Research Bioethics

  3. National Bioethics Committee AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: • It is an advisory body on bioethics in the health sector in Pakistan. The Committee would: • Promote and facilitate ethical health services delivery, health research and health education. • Be an umbrella body linked with the Ethics Review Committees in various organizations e.g. PMDC, Medical Colleges, Universities, Ministry of Health etc.

  4. National Bioethics Committee • NBC is an independent functioning body with two major sub-committees: • Research Ethics Committee (REC): To address ethics in health research. • Medical Ethics Committee (MEC): To address ethics in medical practice and education.

  5. National Bioethics Committee PROGRESS: • Developed SOPs for NBC and guidelines for Research Ethics Committee (REC) • Developed guidelines for Stem Cells Research/ Therapeutic use and Regulations in Pakistan

  6. National Bioethics Committee PROGRESS (Cont): • Prioritization of Ethical Issues in Pakistan • Formulation of Bioethics ACT for ethical issues in medical research

  7. National Bioethics Committee National Training for Establishing IERCs in Pakistan: • 3 day training was held in collaboration with WHO EMRO where 33 participants were trained • All 10 participating institutions have constituted their IERCs

  8. National Bioethics Committee • 2nd round of training of IERC has started and training done in 1 province as capacity building exercise • This shall be done in all 4 provinces

  9. National Bioethics Committee PROJECTS FOR ETHICAL CLEARANCE • Research Ethics Committee of NBC Reviewed 10 projects and cleared 7.
