  1. For such a time as this 2/27/11

  2. Summary of Esther • King Ahasuerus is king of the Persian Empire • Queen Vashti gets the boot for disobedience • The hunt for a new queen begins • Esther is a young virgin who is eligible • Through 12 months of preparation, she is presented before the King and chosen • A parallel plot to destroy the Jews was in motion

  3. The story behind the story • Esther was her Persian name. Her Hebrew name was Hadassah • Hadassah was named after the myrtle evergreen. When faced with a “winter” season, her color did not wither or fade • She had a whole lot of excuses if she wanted to use them – she is a Jew, from the tribe of Benjamin, she is an orphan, etc

  4. Chapter 4 • Mordecai as a leader, of the Jews in Shushan, recognizes that Queen Esther is their only hope • She knows Persian law, and knows that her entering the king’s presence could result in her execution • Mordecai notes that this may be a defining moment in her life

  5. Esther’s response • She realized that it was God’s favor that allowed her to be queen, not her beauty • She recognized the power of prayer and fasting • She was willing to lay down her life for the lives of the Jews, to either protect them, or die with them

  6. How it all works out • With courage, she stood in the inner court of the palace hoping to be invited in • The golden scepter was extended • She touched the tip of the scepter, she accepted the invitation • An expression of his love for her follows – offers her up to half his kingdom – symbolic of sharing authority with her

  7. The rest of the story • Esther holds a banquet for the king, herself, and the enemy of the Jews • God spares Mordecai • Haman parades Mordecai through the streets • Esther shines a light on her heritage and calls out Haman • The king leaves in fury, Haman assaults Esther, and Haman is hanged • Mordecai is given the king’s signet ring
