Optimizing Faculty Workload: A Model for Balanced Teaching, Research, and Service

DESCRIPTION

This presentation discusses a comprehensive workload model developed by Dr. Ramzi J. Mahmood at California State University, Sacramento. It emphasizes transparency and fairness in faculty workloads, integrating teaching, research, and service commitments through an innovative weighted teaching units (WTU) system. With examples that illustrate the allocation of teaching units, and mechanisms such as buy-out options for research time, this model addresses the complexities of academic responsibilities while aiming for sustainability and feasibility in both institutional and community service.

  7. Example - continued • A faculty member can • Buy 6 WTUs (40%) of workload to do research • Teach 2 courses (40%) • Service/Research (20%)

  8. Other Models • Depends on number of students • Increase workload factor • Funding base dependent

  9. Terms for Budgeting • SFR – Student Faculty Ratio ~ 18 our target is 20 • FTES – Full-time equivalent student (FTES) • Student that takes 15 units • Target of number of students – 300 FTES
