Rationing . . . Food rationing began in 1940. This meant each person could buy only a fixed amount of certain foods each week. Much of Britain's food came from other countries in ships. Enemy submarines sank so many ships that there was a shortage of some foods. People had to hand over coupons from their ration book, as well as money, for provisions. Once someone used their ration of one food (say, cheese or meat), they could not buy any more that week. Vegetarians could swap meat coupons for other foods.
We would have missed . . .frozen pizza, chicken nuggets, burgers and chips… Remember, there were NO home freezers! Potatoes were not rationed, so you could make your own chips but only if you could find some oil or fat to cook them in. With eggs also rationed, people tried dried egg powder. One packet was equal to 12 fresh eggs. Unfamiliar foods appeared too, such as Spam (tinned meat) from America, and snoek, a fish from South Africa.
Trench Food . . . Harry Barnsley described that food was supplied by a man crawling along with a sackful of tins, throwing them out one between two men. They opened the tin with a bayonet and dug-in with their fingers to the stone-cold food. It was possible to heat up the tins by lighting a fuse attached to a tube in the centre of the tin, however this often resulted in casualties. At the beginning of the war, no bread was received for 6 weeks, only army biscuits. When the bread arrived there were 2 slices, one was eaten straight away and the other kept until the next day. 24 hour ration packs were supplied for 12 men at a time containing food and even toilet paper. Sometime these were opened and found to be full of bricks because they had been looted by the dockers !
Food over time . . . Today we can pop down to the supermarket and come away with pretty much whatever we want, including a countless amount of products imported from other countries such as bananas and various spices. Accessing food is much more convenient these days with a vast amount of ready meals available and no where near as many people growing their own food. A major difference is the access to online food shopping that we have today- EXTREMELY convenient!
