STRUCTURED WORK PLACEMENT Procedure Complete your Registration Form Nominate 4 preferences that you would be happy to attend Discuss preferences, suburbs, and transport requirements with your parents Return the form to the school asap Receive your placement details 2 weeks prior to the placement Phone the employer and organise an interview Attendance, Appearance, Attitude, Respect

STRUCTURED WORK PLACEMENT At the interview Have the Workplace Agreement signed by the employer Discuss start, lunch and finish times Discuss dress requirements Discuss activities to be undertaken while at work Discuss extracurricular activities eg: sport or part time work Record the employer contact details Return your signed Workplace Agreement to the school.

  4. STRUCTURED WORK PLACEMENT Details to consider Be happy to attend 1 of your 4 preferences List an industry contact if you have one organised. Name & phone# SWL is a privilege and an important part of your education Demonstrate initiative and enthusiasm You have responsibilities to your school, family and your employer. A placement can not take place without an interview Cancellations or letting employers down are serious matters that should be avoided

  5. STRUCTURED WORK PLACEMENT Employer Expectations Attendance: Attend work every day and be punctual. You must also attend an interview prior to the placement Appearance:Be neat and tidy at all times; fit in with the standards of dress required by the employer. Initiative and enthusiasm: Listen and follow instructions. If you don’t understand something, ask for help. Look for things to do – don’t stand around when you have finished one task. Effective interaction: Positive teamwork with co-workers. Be polite and show respect. Address adults correctly (eg Mr, Mrs) Phone the employer and organise an interview Safe work practices and non-discriminatory work practices:Follow all workplace health and safety regulations and rules.

  8. STRUCTURED WORK PLACEMENT How does SWL Benefit Students? Develop realistic career path alternatives Gain knowledge of employers expectations Gain knowledge, skills and attitudes that are relevant to, and valued in the workplace Gain confidence and better communication skills through learning in a working environment Apply the knowledge that is learnt in the classroom to a workplace situation Make contacts that can lead to future job prospects

  9. O U T C O M E S • You are offered a school-based. traineeship/apprenticeship. • You are offered some part-time work. • You decide that this career choice is not for you. • You enjoy the placement and you make a goal to become employed in this occupation in the future.

  10. Specific Industry Requirements • Police Force –  Queensland Police Force no longer accept Workplace Students • Fire, Ambulance and Security—Service placements are not available without a contact. • Australia Zoo -  Australia Zoo do not operate a Work Experience Program however they will accept  students on a Volunteer basis—students must be 16 years at the time of placement. • A $50 deposit for a uniform is applicable and will be refunded at the end of the placement when the uniform has been returned. • Please check the website for volunteer duties. • To become involved in their Volunteer program, contact 5436 2038 or access via www.australiazoo.com.au/get-involved/become-a-volunteer/

Specific Industry Requirements • Trades - Electrician, Plumber, Builder etc. - Will require White Card for Construction and must be able to travel to regional job sites • Education & Early Childhood – May require the Working with Children Blue Card if the student is studying a Certificate based course in early childhood at school • The industries listed on the next slide are extremely difficult to find placements for students and they are advised to source their own contacts • Proactive students can ensure they get the placement of their choice! Students are advised to identify contacts from their family networks and prepare a resume and approach industry to secure placements

Specific Industry Requirements • Photography, Advertising, Film, TV and Journalism • Graphic Design / Interior Design / Web/Game Design / Artists • Financial Services / Accounts / Law • Modelling, Fashion Design and Acting • Aviation – Pilot, Engineer and Mechanic (Must be able to travel to an airport) • Trades - Electrician, Plumber, Builder, Mechanic etc.  -  Will require White Card for Construction and must be able to travel to regional job sites to ensure a placement. Own contacts are advised to be provided by student due to the uncertainty of future work and weather permitting. • Medical – Hospitals, Doctors/Nurses, Chiropractor, All Allied Health Fields, Counselling, Phycology/Sociology Sustainable Partnerships Australia may not be able to place you in the above industries without a contact due to limited placement opportunities
