  1. WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF DRINKING ALCOHOL? For most people, they can barely wait to be up to the legal age to buy and consume alcohol. Alcohol consumption has become a trend. With each passing year, more people are indulging in alcohol intake. Many of these people who are indulging in alcohol intake are largely unaware of the harmful effects of taking in lots of alcohol. For them, it is either a recreational activity or something they just do for the fun of it. There are many ways alcohol intake can be detrimental to those who ingest it. Many parts of the body get affected when one drinks alcohol. Here are some of the risks one is exposed to when alcohol is consumed in excess. Drinking Alcohol Affects the Liver The liver functions as the body’s detoxifier. This organ helps the body break down and eliminate toxic or harmful substances from the body. One such substance is alcohol. When one drinks alcohol for a long time, it interferes with the detoxifying process of the liver. This leads to an increase in the risk of getting cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is the formation of destructive scars caused by chronic liver inflammation. This scarring destroys the liver and makes it increasingly difficult for the liver to remove toxic substances from the body. There are also other alcohol-related liver diseases. These diseases are often life threatening. Alcohol Intake Can Affect the Functions of the Pancreas Drinking alcohol has detrimental effects on the way the pancreas functions. The pancreas works hand in hand with the liver to regulate the body’s response to glucose and the way the body uses insulin. There is the high risk of experiencing hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) when the functionality of the pancreas and liver are impaired. Damage to the pancreas and impairment of proper pancreatic functioning would prevent the pancreas from generating enough insulin to make proper use of ingested sugar. This would lead to hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) and eventual diabetes because the body can no longer manage and balance blood sugar levels.

  2. Drinking Alcohol Can Lead to Temporary or Permanent Central Nervous System Damage The first and easiest effects of alcohol intake are often evident in the impact alcohol has on the body’s central nervous system. When one has had too much to drink, one begins to lose balance and speech becomes slurred. This is because alcohol in the body minimizes communication between the body and the brain and this makes coordination harder. With further intake of alcohol, numbness and tingling sensations are felt in the body’s extremities like the hands and feet. Drinking reduces one’s ability to make rational choices. In extreme cases, permanent brain damage occurs. This affects one’s motor skills, emotional control and memory. If individuals intend to have a long fulfilling life, learning how to stop drinking alcohol should be a primary goal. This can prove difficult. However, Allen Carr offers those who want and need to stop drinking an easy way to get out of this addiction process and to stop before it is too late.
