  2. Rudolfo Anaya • Born October 30, 1937 • Born and raised in east New Mexico • Mother’s lineage was that of farmers • Father’s was that of the vaqueros (cowboys)

  3. Anaya cont. • Bless Me, Ultima took several years to write • First published in a Chicano magazine • Anaya holds multiple awards for his works

  4. Vaqueros • Vaquero’s lived “by the moon” • Disliked being tied down to one piece of land • Free spirits • Wild; conquistador blood

  5. Farmers • Lived by the land • Comfort in one area

  6. Continued • Both were tied to the land in some way or another. • Farming or raising cattle, etc.

  7. New Mexico, US • The novel takes place in Pastura, New Mexico (not Mexico). • Pastura is a city within Guadalupe County.

  8. Wars in America • The setting of the story is the 1940’s during World War II • Book was written and published in the 1970’s during the Vietnam War.

  9. Time Period • World War II • 1939-1945 • Involved 61 countries, 1.7 billion people. • The Second World War was started by Germany in an unprovoked attack on Poland. Britain and France declared war on Germany after Hitler had refused to abort his invasion of Poland. • 6,500 citizens of New Mexico served in the war.

  10. Curanderismo • Folk medicine • “Witchcraft” • Both Curanderismo and witchcraft were greatly influenced by Catholicism and the Native Americans in the South West. • A curandero/a is a healer.

  11. Curanderismo continued • Throughout Hispanic communities, especially in small towns exists a strong belief in a system of folk medicine. This includes herbal remedies. It is believed that people with knowledge in these areas can cure certain illnesses and even psychological problems.

  12. “You are healed!” • Also known to have the power to cure illnesses of magical origin. • Susto: Occurs when a person has a traumatic or frightening experience. • Symptoms can be physical and or emotional

  13. Magical Realism • The combination of reality with fantasy or mystical qualities.

  14. Magical Realism • Magical elements appear in an otherwise realistic or even "normal" settings. • The movie Big • A boy wishes to be an adult to fortune-telling machine and it comes true the next morning.

Big Questions for BMU • IN THE BOOK: • What is the meaning of Antonio’s dreams? • Why is Antonio’s fate so important to his family and Ultima? • What are some of the connections between people and animals? • How does religion affect Antonio’s decisions about life? • Where do we see magical realism in the novel? How does it affect the plot?

  16. Big Questions for BMU • IN REAL LIFE: • Can different cultures mix? • How does war affect people? • How does the author feel about war? • What makes someone good? What makes them evil?

  17. Coming of Age • Tony’s search for his destiny through Ultima’s guidance.

  18. Continued • Tony must choose his own destiny even though he feels pressure from both sides of his family. Ultima understands this and becomes his mentor.

  19. Uncertainty results in doubting in faith of religion and realizes temptation of evil in humankind.

  20. Good vs. Evil • Tony loses his innocence when he realizes there is evil in the world as seen in dream #3.

  21. Objective: Determine why characters in the novel have certain moral beliefs. • Which question can we use to help meet this objective?

  22. La Llorona The legend states she drowned her children because a man she loved had no interest in kids. She subsequently killed herself. She is doomed to wander, crying. The tale also states that she will kidnap wandering or misbehaving children.

  26. Themes • Rites of Passage – A ritual event that marks a person’s progress from one status to another. These can include coming of age, maturity, marriage, or death. (Rite = Established, ceremonious, usually religious act)
