History Modern game grew out of three sports developed in three different European countries: • Czech “Hazena” (1892) • Danish “Handbold” (1898) • German “Torball” (1915) • Based on soccer, but replaced the foot with the hand (batting or throwing). Combination of basketball, soccer, hockey and lacrosse. Described as water polo on land. Fastest and most exciting sport in the world?

  4. Karl Schelenz • Berlin Physical Education School in 1919 combined elements of “handbold” (Danish) and “torball” (German) and adapted the soccer playing field for a new sport, which he called handball. He also borrowed from basketball to allow dribbling as a means of advancing the ball.

Handball today: 1925 - 1930 Olympics, Women, and Popularity Restored back to the Olympics in 1972 Competition for women’s teams began in 1976 Number two men’s sport outside North America, behind Soccer. Number one women’s sport outside North America. • Designed to be played outdoors by teams of 11 players. • Indoor version was being developed in Scandinavian countries. • 7 on 7 • After WWII 7 player game took over 11 player in Europe and spread to other continents.
