What schooling do you have to do? • The level of skill required of an executive chef or cook in a fine restaurant, many years of training and experience are necessary. An increasing number of chefs and cooks obtain their training through high school, post-high school vocational programs, or 2- or 4-year colleges. Chefs and cooks also may be trained in apprenticeship programs offered by professional culinary institutes, industry associations, and trade unions.

What is required to be a professional cook? • To become a cook, you need a keen sense of taste and smell and an interest in preparing food. The ability to work as part of a team is also important. You should be able to pay close attention to detail, follow recipes, and measure ingredients exactly. Cleanliness, of course, is a must. • Prepare dishes according to recipes • Clean and cut fish and meat; wash and prepare fruits and vegetables • Use deep fryers, ovens, grills, and griddles to cook food • Keep kitchen and cooking equipment clean • May supervise kitchen workers, order supplies, and help plan menus
