  2. Who We Are: Oklahoma Engineering Foundation Our Mission The Oklahoma Engineering Foundation is an organization of engineers, educators, and industry and community partners committed to furthering STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education in Oklahoma, producing engineering professionals, and employing them in Oklahoma. * OEF OUR VISION To ENGAGEstudents in middle and high school, ENCOURAGE collegiate students through scholarships, and EMPOWER those students to succeed in engineering careers due to partnerships with industry and community leaders. Our Focus Uniting Forces with other STEM Initiatives aligned with our mission and vision. 2

  3. WHY STEM EDUCATION? 6,260 STEM job openings per year projected for next 10 years* 4,171 STEM entry professionals per year* CORE STEM Shifting from TRADITIONAL to TECHNOLOGY! We must show students the creative importance, earning potential, and personal fulfillment possible from pursuing a STEM Career. *“OneOklahoma: A Strategic Plan for Science and Technology in Oklahoma, 2012” by Governor Mary Fallin’s Science & Technology Council 3

  4. STEM vs ENGINEERING Chosen Majors at Oklahoma Universities/Colleges: Engineering ranks 7th Engineering Technology ranks 10th 28% of teens have considered engineering career 63% of teens have NOT considered engineering career* Exposure Career 44% of teens say More engineering exposure would most make them consider engineering as a career. The ideal engineering candidate will already be pursuing science, technology, and mathematics: a STEM education student. *Intel, “Survey of Teens’ Perceptions of Engineering” December 2011 4

  5. 24.6% of college degrees awarded in Oklahoma are Science & Engineering degrees, decreasing at a rate of .37% per year. Why are less students achieving engineering degrees each year? Students must not just WANT an engineering degree…they must be prepared to succeed through the engineering courses. Proper preparation is dependent upon middle and high school STEM success. 5

  6. Engineering salaries According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which surveys college and university career services offices nationwide, these are the highest-paid disciplines: Petroleum Engineering: $86,220Chemical Engineering: $65,142Mining & Mineral Engineering: $64,552Computer Science: $61,205Computer Engineering: $60,879Electrical/Electronics & Communications Engineering: $59,074Mechanical Engineering: $58,392Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering: $57,734Aerospace/Aeronautical/Astronautical Engineering: $57,231Information Sciences & Systems: $54,038 6
