  2. John’s Final Remarks(1 John 5:13-21) • John wrote this epistle so that the readers might know that they have eternal life (v.13). We do not have to guess and hope that we are saved. We can have assurance of our eternal security in Jesus!

  3. John’s Final Remarks(1 John 5:13-21) II. Our Confidence toward Him: our prayers are effectual (v.14-15). A. We have great confidence in Jesus. 1. If we ask according to his will, he will hear us. a) “Asking according to his will” is praying requests that are consistent with his revealed will.

  4. John’s Final Remarks(1 John 5:13-21) b) Easiest way to pray in God’s will: pray the scriptures and the spirit of the scriptures (i.e., principles drawn from scriptures). Can some one give an example? (e.g. Matt. 19:19 and George Zimmerman)

  5. John’s Final Remarks(1 John 5:13-21) Why would praying the Scriptures be effective? Praying in this manner is effective because the Scriptures are the word of God and they explicitly express his will and desires. Thus, to “pray the Scriptures”is to pray God’s word back to him. When we pray His word, we know that God hears because our prayers are consistent with his will. Thus, God’s answers those prayers subject to his sovereignty.

  6. John’s Final Remarks(1 John 5:13-21) B. Prayers that are outside God’s will are not answered (Jas. 4:3). --Praying “amiss” or “wrongly” is praying outside God’s will to feed our private passions and desires. What are some examples?

  7. John’s Final Remarks(1 John 5:13-21) C. Intercession is appropriate in all cases except one: when one engages in sin that leads to death (v.16-17). 1. All wrongdoing is sin (v.17). 2. The meaning of “sin that leads to death” was apparently clear to John’s readers but it presents difficulty for us.

  8. John’s Final Remarks(1 John 5:13-21) 3. The “sin that leads to death” may mean: a) Unbelievers who reject the truth of Jesus and refuse to repent and believe (Heb. 6:4-6). b) Believers whose sin is so bad that God punishes with immediate death (see, Acts 5:1-11, 1 Cor. 11:27-30).

  9. John’s Final Remarks(1 John 5:13-21) • True Believers do not make a lifestyle of sinning (v.18). A. True believers are protected by Jesus. B. The evil one is unable to fasten a grip upon them.

  10. John’s Final Remarks(1 John 5:13-21) IV. This world system lies in the power of the Evil One, but we belong to God (v.19). A. The world’s politics, economics, education, entertainment, and its religion lies in the power of Satan. B. You’re either with Jesus or you’re with Satan (see, Luke 11:23).

  11. John’s Final Remarks(1 John 5:13-21) • Worship Jesus only and keep from idols! (v.20-21). A. Either you worship God through Jesus or you worship a false, idol god (v.20). B. This “god” could be your children, money, ideas, or yourself—in addition to false gods of other religions.
