    2. 2 STATUS OF WOMEN IN ASIA: AN ANTHROP0LOGICAL PERSPECTIVE Value ascribed to women Value ascribed to womens activities Degree of control women have over own lives Why anthropological as opposed to religious? Anthropology above all else is interested in the diversity and comparison of humankind Anthropologists have made great strides to be on guard against ethnocentrism (the belief that ones own organization, cultural practices, assumptions are superior, and normal) Thus, the anthropological approach is to evaluate each culture on its own terms Argues that each culture has its own way of thinking, rationale, and it is this that must be understood before one can understand the workings of society While generally we will be focusing on the religious and historical role of women, rituals, general place in religion, this introductory lecture will attempt to give a dangerously generalized overview focusing on general trends within Asia, vis a vis women Notion of status is profoundly problematic But here is a general understanding of what anthropologists mean when they refer to status - SLIDEWhy anthropological as opposed to religious? Is it an issue of superiority or inferiority OR simply difference - In some societies men and women may have equal status, but in different spheres of life - In some societies men and women may have equal status, but in different spheres of life

    4. 4 ANTHROPOLOGY APPROACH: The answer is generally posited that certain types of power are more important than other types of power.
