  1. Our Future Hope Often a HUGE gap between our mental belief and our expectant hope of eternal life! “I believe in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting”

  2. Our Future Hope Contrast this with the following scriptures: Philippians 1:21-25: “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If it is to be life in the flesh, that means fruitful labour for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith.”

  3. Our Future Hope Contrast this with the following scriptures: 2 Corinthians 5:4-5: “For while we are still in this tent, we sigh with anxiety; not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.”

  4. Our Future Hope Contrast this with the following scriptures: 2 Corinthians 5:6-9: “So we are always of good courage; we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. We are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.”

  5. Our Future Hope Contrast this with the following scriptures: 2 Corinthians 4:16-17: “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed every day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.”

  6. Our Future Hope Contrast this with the following scriptures: 2 Timothy 4:6-8: “For I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”

  7. Our Future Hope Contrast this with the following scriptures: Philippians 3:20 (NLT): “But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Saviour.” 1 Peter 2:11-12 (NLT): “Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.”

  8. Our Future Hope So what are the possible reasons there is such a gulf between our thinking and that of those first generation believers: 1. Many alive had actually seen and known Jesus himself and had even witnessed his resurrection from the dead. 1 Corinthians15:5-8: “And that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles Last of all …. he appeared also to me.”

  9. Our Future Hope 2. For Paul, he had had two amazing heavenly encounters, firstly, in meeting the risen glorified Lord at his conversion, and secondly, he was caught up to heaven where he witnessed amazing things 2 Corinthians 12:2-4: “I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise …. and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.”

  10. Our Future Hope 3. The roots of this world are so deeply entrenched in our thinking that the future hope is almost irrelevant Contrast the thinking to that in places such as Africa, where poverty, disease and death are daily companions – they have little difficulty in joyfully awaiting their future hope – it can only be better than the present.

  11. Our Future Hope • So what is our future hope? • Being caught up to meet Jesus when He returns • 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18: “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord. ” (vs.16-17)

  12. Our Future Hope • So what is our future hope? • Everlasting life – life that has no end and no limit to its quality and fulfilment • John 3:36: “He who believes in the Son has eternal life.” • Psalm 16:11: “Thou dost show me the path of life;     in thy presence there is fulness of joy, in thy right hand are pleasures for evermore.”

  13. Our Future Hope • So what is our future hope? • A new body designed for a new dimension of living • 1 Corinthians 15:42-44: “So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonour, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body.”

  14. Our Future Hope • So what is our future hope? • To be just like Jesus in appearance • 1 John 3:2: “Beloved, we are God’s children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as he is.” • 1 Corinthians 15:49: “Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shallalso bear the image of the man of heaven.”

  15. Our Future Hope • So what is our future hope? • To live in a place free from death, disease, poverty, and sorrow • Revelation 21:3-5: “Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people ….He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away …. Behold, I make all things new.”

  16. Our Future Hope • So what is our future hope? • To be exercising authority alongside Jesus • Revelation 3:21: “He who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on His throne.” • Final exhortation • 1 Peter 1:13: • “Therefore gird up your minds, be sober, set your hope fully upon the grace that is coming to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
