  1. Introduction • Basic Requirements for a facade: • comfortable indoor climate • sound protection • good lighting • minimal energy input

  2. Introduction • A Double Skin Facade (DSF) can provide: • a thermal buffer zone • solar preheating of ventilation air • sound protection • wind protection with open windows • pollutant protection with open windows • fire protection • nocturnal cooling • aesthetics • site for incorporating PV cells

  3. Project aims • Best Practice Guidelines based on a comprehensive survey of DSFs • Information on built examples of DSF office buildings • Confidence concerning operating performance investment and maintenance costs shall be increased

  6. Bestfacade • WP1 – State Of the Art • Collection of data on DSFs in different countries and climatic regions • Development of a coherent typology • Basic principles, history • Questionnaires investigating thermal be- havior, indoor air quality, comfort and user acceptance, energy demand a. consumption • Report on State Of the Art

  7. Bestfacade • WP2 – Non-Technological Barriers • Two Phases: • Analysis of non-technological barriers Legal, Financial, Institutional, Standardization, Educational • Strategies to overcome these barriers • Results will be incorporated in the dissemination activities

  8. Bestfacade • WP3 – Benchmarks and Certification • Using results from WP1 a benchmark system have been developed • Building owners and operators may compare their energy consumption with other buildings • Advice and measures to reduce energy consumption will be offered

  9. Bestfacade • WP4 – Simple Calculation Method • For an assessment of thermal behaviour complex simulation tools are necessary • Extensive iterations are often required • No predictions on energy efficiency and user comfort in the early planning phase • Development of a monthly balanced calculation method • Reliable prediction on energy consumption in the early planning phase

  10. Bestfacade • WP5 – Best Practice Guidelines • Design guide with best practice examples • Providing basic scientific, technical and economic knowledge on DSFs • Case studies, potential advantages and disadvantages • Non energy related issues • Review of simulation tools
