Work in pairs… • You & your partner work for the Advertising Department of Migros Supermarkets • One of your competitors – Aldi, is currently running a very successful Christmas advertising campaign • Your boss has asked your team to design a campaign to rival your competition • Discuss your ideas & put together a campaign plan to present to your group

  4. So why do Business English coursebooks include case studies? Objectives of Case Study lessons… • Brings the real business world into the classroom • Ss practice vocabulary & functional language from the unit • To enhance communication skills (both verbal & non-verbal) • To train managerial communication skills such as meetings • Ss develop critical thinking • To encourage collaborative learning & team working • Ss improve their organizational skills

So why don’t they always go the way we had planned? • Topics are not relevant to our students’ working lives • Topics are bland, students don’t find them interesting or motivating • Topics are meaningless & highly specific • Ss may not have the necessary functional language to deal with the discussion effectively • Ss have little or no imagination – especially after a hard day’s work or at 07:30 am!

Discussion pointers help to get students talking about the concept or approach and personalising it to their own situation Each Talking Point is based on an interesting concept, process or approach that is relatable for any student in any business profession Input on the topic with examples from the business world introduces the topic to the students Task allows students to apply the concept to their own work, and provides the opportunity to use language from the unit. Business English you can take to work today

Talking Point lesson plan Going Viral (Pre-intermediate) – Pre-Task activities • Jigsaw reading task (each student receives one of the points, reads it & summarizes for the group who make notes) • Group discussion – how are the tips different or similar to traditional ways of advertising? • Students categorize the tips in the order of least to most important and share ideas with the other groups • Personalisation – which videos do you share with family and friends & why?

Talking Point lesson plan Going viral (Pre-intermediate) – Task activities • Ss work together to plan a short video to promote their company or a place they know well (e.g.: Switzerland) • Ss decide on the subject , decide which of the tips would be important for their video • In groups, Ss plan the video, indicating timing of each section • Ss present their plan to the group, finally the group decides on the best plan

Talking point lesson plan The ‘gig’ economy (Advanced) - Pre-task activities • Ask Ss to think about the difference between careers in their father’s (or grandfather’s day) as oppose to careers now • Use the discussion questions 1 & 2 as a springboard for brainstorming • Ss work in pairs to complete lists of pros & cons for a ‘gig’ career, finally scanning the text for any ideas they have missed • Pairs join another pair, compare their answers & discuss questions 4 & 5

Talking Point lesson plan The ‘gig’ economy (Advanced ) - Task activities • Dictate the quote by Arun Sundarajan (see handout) • Ss check their work & reflect on the quote for a minute or two • Ss spend 10 minutes thinking of something they would do as a ‘gig on the side’ using the grid to help them organize their ideas (if they are unable (or too shy) to think about themselves, they could use the example of a colleague or family member) • Ss discuss their ideas within the whole group who ask questions to help develop the ideas. • Ss finally vote on which idea they have the most confidence in

Key points to remember Talking Points work when…. • Your students are interested to learn more about the topic • Your students are motivated & well-prepared to take part in the discussions & tasks • Discussion pointers get students to talk about the concept & are aimed at personalisation • The tasks are realistic & relevant to the students’ own reality • The topics are of interest both inside & outside of the classroom
