Washington’s Presidency • As the first President, Washington knew he would set the standard for everyone to follow • He faced several problems as President • The economy • Trouble in the Northwest Territory • The Whiskey Rebellion • The French Revolution (left to Jefferson) • He created the first cabinet, and set a tone of dignity that all Presidents since have tried to copy during their terms in office (read page 259 and list the 4 departments in the cabinet AND who the secretaries are)

  4. Economic Problems • The US owed more than $50 million, and everyone was worried about the economy • Alexander Hamilton came up with a plan to fix the problems: • Pay off war debts • Raise government revenue • Create a national bank Read page 261 (Hamilton’s Plan & Opposition to the Plan) - Discuss with a shoulder partner what you just read

  5. Economic Problems Exit Ticket/Discussion: • Was it necessary for the US to go into debt in the first place? • Restate the question IN your answer • Use complete sentence(s) • Think about WHAT/WHY the US went into debt to pay for… aka EXPLAIN your answer

  6. Economic Problems Warm Up/Discussion: • What were the “economic problems” and how were they solved? • Restate the question IN your answer • Use complete sentence(s) • Think about WHO helped Washington fix the economic problem, and why people opposed the solutions…

  7. Problems in the Northwest Territory • After the War of Independence, white settlers began moving to the Northwest Territory in larger numbers. • The Indians already living there didn’t like it, and got help from the British in Canada • Twice, the Indians (led by Little Turtle) beat a US army sent to fight them • At the Battle of Fallen Timbers (page 264), the US army beat them, crushing the Indians’ hope of keeping their land. • The Treaty of Greenville ended the fighting, and the Indians gave a lot of land up to the US government.

  9. Northwest Territory (page 264) Exit Ticket/Discussion: • What was the “problem in the Northwest Territory,” and how did Washington handle it? • Restate the question IN your answer • Use complete sentence(s) • Make sure you mention how England (Canada) was involved

  10. Whiskey Rebellion • The government began to tax whiskey, which outraged farmers who grew the grain that it was made from. • In 1794, a group of Pennsylvania farmers staged a rebellion against the tax • Washington, to enforce the authority of the federal government, sent an army to crush the rebels, who ran without fighting.

  11. Whiskey Rebellion Exit Ticket/Discussion: • If you wanted to protest against a tax TODAY, would it be a good idea to do what the Pennsylvania farmers did during the Whiskey Rebellion? • Restate the question IN your answer • Use complete sentence(s) • Think about how people protested in Ferguson and NYC… and all over the news lately!

  13. The French Revolution Happened during Washington’s time, but most of the issues were dealt with during Jefferson’s time. • In 1789, the people of France began to rebel against their monarch, demanding liberty and equality for all; America at first supported the Revolution • The Revolution got very violent, and lost American support; a war between France and Britain began • The US declared itself neutral (page 264-266) in the war, but Britain made staying neutral difficult by seizing US ships headed for France • A war between the US and Britain was narrowly avoided by Jay’s Treaty

  14. The French Revolution Exit Ticket/Discussion: • What was Washington’s foreign policy? What was the French Revolution about? • Restate the question IN your answer • Use complete sentence(s) • Consider cultural change, and what the US went through that inspired the French Revolution.
