  1. The four dimensionsof growth

  2. Jesus’ earlier days… • Luke 2:41-51 • Just “there” in the middle of the narrative? • Look at context: Luke 2 and 3 • Luke 2:40 and 2:52 key “link” verses • We see how Jesus was growing • Luke 2:52 • Growth in wisdom, stature, favor with God and men • See also 1 Sam 2:22-26 • Contrast between Eli’s sons and Samuel

  3. Wisdom • Wisdom, knowledge and instruction… • How the world may think of “wisdom” • Wisdom is practical = properly applied knowledge • True wisdom is precious and rare in this world • 1 Cor 1:19-21; Prov 8:10-11 • Appreciate wisdom, seek it, find it • Benefits of wisdom - Prov 8:32-36 - Get wisdom! • Obtaining wisdom - Prov 1:7 and 9:10; 2:1-6.

  4. Favor with God • Jesus obtained favor with God • Luke 3:21-22 -> Luke 4:4, 7, 10 - reciprocal • “Favor with someone” not strictly within our control • God’s favor = His answer to our attempts to please Him • …and we know how to please Him • He provided us with His word • Prov 3:1-8 - Example of seeking-and-obtaining favor • Notice the structure: “Do this…” and “this will happen…” • “Do this” - 3:1, 3, 5-6a, 7; “This will happen” - 3:2, 4, 6b, 8

  5. Favor with men • Why would Jesus seek favor with men? • Wisdom + Favor with God -> Favor with men • Deut 4:5-8 • Gen 39:2-6, 19-23 - God was with Joseph • Jesus sought favor with men? • Yes! …not giving them what they want but what they need! • John 4:6-10 - Jesus breaks all barriers • “Favor with men” starts within the church!

  6. Stature • A change in stature is the most evident sign of growth • It also shows us how growth happens • We need to feed it! • Stature (passing of time) is a visible sign of progress • Growth directly linked to passing of time • 1 Cor 3:1-3a - Lack of growth • Growth is expected and must happen!

  7. The four dimensionsof growth(Luke 2:52)
