  1. Silicon Prairie Initiative on Robotics in Information Technology An Introduction to Engineering

  2. Reflection • What is engineering? • How did you learn about engineering? • What are your impressions of engineering?

  3. Reflection • Can you name one thing in this room (excluding yourself) that was not developed, produced, or delivered by an engineer?

  4. Reflection • Can you name a profession that is affecting your daily life more incisively than engineering?

  5. Reflection • Can you define the engineering method for solving a problem?

  6. Design in a major sense is the essence of engineering. Design, above all else, distinguishes engineering from science. Hancock, 1986

  7. Reflection • Is Engineering Design an “Art” or a “Science”?

  8. "Design is an art practiced within the constraints of science." C. Sedlacek 9/24/01

  9. What is Engineering? Engineering is the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, (ABET)

  10. Who Cares? • Engineers care! • the public does not understand the contributions of engineers and engineering to their quality of life • government leaders are no more conversant with technology issues than the public • the lack of public interest may undermine the attraction of the engineering profession to young people

  11. The word engineer has its roots in the Latin word ingeniator, which means ingenious, to devise in the sense of construct, or craftsmanship. Several other words are related to ingeniator, including ingenuity.
