  2. Japan ends Isolation • Tokugawa Shogunate Collapses after 200 year rule • China Major Trading Partner Until 1800’s • 1853 Commodore Perry- Steam power and Cannons threatens Japan

  3. Meiji Restoration • 1854 Treaty of Kanagawa- opens ports • 1868 Sat-Cho rebellion defeats Tokugawa and restores Emperor as full power. Reduced power of the Daimyo. • 1867-1912 Meiji – counters West by modernizing • Military- imitate German army and small central government as well as British Navy. Compulsory military for 3 years. • Universal Education: American Model. Women included.
