  1. THE KOBE EARTHQUAKE 17th January 1995

  2. WHERE IS KOBE? Kobe is in Japan on the main island of Honshu it is a large fishing port.Awaji the small island where the epicentre of the quake was is 20 miles to the south of Kobe.

  3. WHAT CAUSED THE EARTHQUAKE? The reason why the Kobe earthquake happened was that it is on a plate margin. The boundary between the Pacific,Philippines and the Eurasian plates. The Pacific plate is moving underneath the Eurasian plate, this is called a subduction zone.

  4. THE TYPES OF DAMAGE THAT OCCURRED • There were three kinds of damage that occurred • structural • fire • disruption to services Here is some structural damage of a holy shrine Here is a train de-railed in the earthquake, this is disruption of services. Here are two images of fire damage

  5. KOBE 17th JANUARY 1995 TYPES OF DAMAGE AND DISRUPTION CAUSED DURING AND AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

  6. ·Violent shuddering and a terrifying rumbling sound. • ·Ceiling lights swing and dent the ceiling then crash to the floor. • ·Traditional Japanese wooden houses collapse to the ground, many catch fire. • · Big aftershocks cause further panic. • · Furniture is thrown across the room.

  7. · TheContents of the fridge is scattered over the kitchen. • ·Electricity is cut off. • ·Gas and water supplies are cut off. • ·Shops are damaged, they collapse to the ground. • ·Railway lines are bent into an S-shape. • ·Elevated motorways are tipped on their side. • Roads are blocked by debris and the movement of people.

  8. REMEMBER THIS ALL HAPPENED IN ONLY 20 SECONDS

  9. HOW MANY PEOPLE DIED? THE DEATH TOLL WAS 1800 And thousands more were made homeless

  10. ONE SURVIVOR SAID ‘IT WAS LIKE A BIG HAND SHAKING MY WORLD’

  11. WHAT PRECAUTIONS DID JAPAN TAKE TO LESSEN THE IMPACT OF AN EARTHQUAKE? • The Japanese take many precautions to lessen the impact of an earthquake. They have a national earthquake day once a year where they take part in organised drills in which everybody practices what they would do in the event of an earthquake. Some practices are: • They go into any open area where it is safe from flying debris or falling buildings as a standard safety procedure. • They practice jumping out of buildings on to enormous inflatable cushion. • They practice rescuing trapped people from skyscrapers or buildings with helicopters. They also supply the public with earthquake kits which include blankets, a transistor radio, food rations, a torch and a first aid kit.

  12. HOW DO THE EMERGENCY SERVICES COPE OR REACT TO AN EARTHQUAKE? The emergency services do cope with earthquakes, it is the many aftershocks that caused some of the biggest problems. The earthquake at 7.2 on the Richter scale was bad enough but for the already collapsed or weakened buildings which the hundreds of aftershocks hit, it was the last straw. They could not withstand this constant earthquake attack. The emergency services were well drilled in this sort of situation but they were simply overstretched and could not handle the frequency of the aftershocks. It was so bad that army troops had to be brought in. The main earthquake happened at 5:46 in the morning, according to a resident the emergency services did not reach her side of town until 9-10:00.

  13. HOW WAS JAPAN PREPARED FOR THE KOBE EARTHQUAKE 1995 Japan was very well prepared for the Kobe earthquake, or so they thought! Even some of the new buildings couldn’t stand up to the earthquake. This is the Kobe bank. Japan had invested in new kinds of buildings which would resist an earthquake if one happened. Three designs were used: 1.Buildings with a shock absorber on the bottom to allow the building to move with the earthquake, therefore not damaging it. 2.Buildings with a massive concrete weight on the roof which moved in the opposite direction to the earthquake motion, therefore stopping any damage. 3. Buildings with very strong metal structures sometimes titanium they are triangular and go straight into the foundations making the building incredibly strong,so making it almost impossible for any damage to occur.

  14. COULD THE JAPANESE HAVE PREDICTED THE EARTHQUAKE? The answer to this question isNO. The Japanese are the only nation in the world that believe that it is possible to predict earthquakes. They have been doing extensive research into it but as yet they are yet to prove this to rest of the world. PREDICTION IS AN EXTREMELY UNSAFE SCIENCE !!!

  15. WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE TO BE IN AN EARTHQUAKE? USING THE LETTER TEMPLATE AND THE INFORMATION FROM THIS PRESENTATION WRITE A LETTER TO A FRIEND SAYING HOW YOU FELT WHEN THE EARTHQUAKE HAPPENED
