  1. THE BOOK THIEF • BY MARKUS ZUSAK

  2. How are we shown through the beginning • of this novel what Liesel is like: • Deaths feelings and relationship with Liesel • The language Death uses about Liesel • The idea of books Strong Resilient Desperate • Alone

  3. Idea 1: The feelings and relationship that Death has for Liesel. Shown through Dialogue “I climbed aboard and took it in my hand, not realizing that I would read her story several hundred times over the years.” Why is this used: To show Death’s connection with Liesel. He reads her story “several hundred times” shows us there is something about her that he connects with. Through her story Death could see what she saw, feel what she felt and go on a journey with her through the pain and sadness of her life. How is this significant: By reading Liesels story he is touched by her in a way that other people had not and by going on a journey with her he is able to connect with her on a different level than he has with other humans.

  4. The feelings and relationship that Death has for Liesel. Shown through Dialogue • Death holds Liesels story close “Yes often I am reminded of her and in one of my vast array of pockets, I have kept her story to retell.” • Death is keeping Liesels story alive through • her Literature

  5. The feelings and relationship that Death has for Liesel. Shown through Dialogue “I saw the book thief three times”. • Strength • Courage • Resilient

  6. Idea 2: The language that Death uses about Liesel “Tears were frozen to the book thief’s face.” • This illustrates to us how there is no one in her life to comfort or wipe away her tears • Symbolic of how everyone around her doesn’t really know her or look out for her. • This is significant also because it shows us how sorrow • has become her constant companion. The only thing in • her life that is always there.

  7. The language that Death uses about Liesel “ Her book was stepped on as the clean up began and although orders were given to clear only the mess of concrete, the girl’s most precious item was several times thrown aboard a garbage truck.” • Her book “The Book Thief” • She is treated like garbage no one cares about her

  8. Idea Three: The idea of Books to show she is strong-willed and resilient “The Book Thief had struck for the first time – the beginning of an illustrious career.” Why is this used: This helps us to understand that she steals more than once in her life so even though she knows its wrong she still does it. We are shown that her stealing wasn’t planned. She ‘struck’ – seized the opportunities as they appeared and from these books found the power of words. Why is this Significant: This is significant because through stealing she feels power. Power because she can control when she steals and who she steals from. Power, because by stealing she is making it like she has more worth than the person she steals from because they seem helpless to stop her.

  9. The idea of Books to show she is strong-willed and resilient ‘Grave Digger’s handbook’. “A twelve-step guide to grave digging success.” Symbolic of: • “the last time she saw her brother” • “The last time she saw her Mother.” • Links her to her foster father Hans • Hubermann

  10. Summary: • RESILIENT, • She is: • STRONG -WILLED • DARING • COURAGEOUS • Shown through: • The relationship and feelings that Death has for Liesel. Shown through Dialogue • The language that Death uses about Liesel • Liesels stealing of Books to show she is strong-willed and resilient
