  3. Closed Loop Control System A more detailed look at a closed loop control system:

Controller: Definitions Set point: Signal indicating desired operating point Summing block: Creates error signal Amplifier: Converts error signal to a powered command that affects system response Actuator: Shifts response of system, hydraulic cylinder, DC motor,etc. Sensor: Device that converts system output to a feedback signal.

  5. Simple Switching Controller Control systems can be as simple as an automated on/off switching device.

  6. PID Controllers Controller response may be a function of three components of the error signal KP = Proportional gain KI = Integral gain KD = Derivative gain

  7. Parameter Effects The effect of the Ks on a system are summarized below. Actual relations are more complex. Ks are not independent.

  8. Transient System Response When you design a controller you may look for parameters that give you a desired transient system response. • Delay time, td • Rise time, tr • Peak time, tp • Overshoot, Mp • Settling time,ts
