  4. Project Goals • Spring 2011 focus • Complete and implement a rain garden design • Move the current location of the rain garden • Create a backyard drainage system for rain garden overflow Boiler Green Initiative

  5. Project History • Previous semesters have implemented a rain garden. The current system consists of: • 2 rain barrels • Rain garden • Overflow leading away from the garden Boiler Green Initiative

  6. Rain Garden Layout Current Location Boiler Green Initiative

  7. Problems with Current Layout • Rock swale leading to garden allows rocks to wash into distribution trench • Rain barrels are not aesthetically pleasing Boiler Green Initiative

  8. Problems with Current Layout • Distribution trench collects soil and rocks and requires regular cleaning • Not effectively distributing water to all plants because of a walkway Boiler Green Initiative

  10. Drainage Sketch - Aerial 60 gal. barrel 3/4” hose Release valve for summer watering Hoses feed straight into pipe 10 ft 3” corrugated pipe 10 ft section of solid piping leading to garden followed by 10ft section of perforated Outflow
