Symbolism As you read literature think about what items are being used over and over again. Look for a hidden meaning to these items.
Read the following excerpt and determine what symbol is used. Look at the diction of the piece and determine the mood using connotation clues to help you. The most prominent object was a long table with a tablecloth spread on it. . . . A centerpiece of some kind was in the middle of this cloth; it was so heavily overhung with cobwebs that its form was quite undistinguishable; . . .
