  1. UPCC Book Collections on Project MUSE® An Overview

Project MUSE: • Nearly 20 Years Serving the Scholarly Community • Originated from a grant-funded joint effort of the library and university press at JHU to deliver the JHUP journals in an electronic format • First collection of 40 JHUP journals offered on the web in Fall 1996 • Early adopters included academic library consortia such as VIVA, OhioLINK, the Oberlin Group, California Digital Library • Expanded in 2000 to incorporate journal content from other not-for-profit scholarly presses, with initial group including 11 major university presses

Project MUSE Today • Well over 150 not-for-profit scholarly publishers contribute content from more than 550 journals to MUSE collections • Over 2700 subscribers in more than 60 countries • Between 2000-2010, MUSE provided libraries well over $100m in savings over individual subscriptions, and returned over $70m in royalties to publishers • Median per-article download under $3.00 • Average of just over $30/journal title

Why Book Collections on • Project MUSE? • Project MUSE has a successful >15-year track record serving libraries, publishers, and users • The JHU Press has strong publisher relationships via both MUSE and Hopkins Fulfillment Services • End users want an integrated experience; MUSE is already a “go to” source for many • Library customers have been asking for some time that MUSE content expand to books

UPCC Book Collections on MUSE: • Content • Over 20,000 full-text books online now • More than 23,000 books expected by end of 2013 • Over 468,000 book chapters fully integrated for searching and browsing with more than 267,000 articles from over 550 respected journals • Publishers select titles for inclusion; MUSE Content Development librarians consult on submissions, encourage synergy with discipline strengths • Expect more publishers, more titles per publisher in coming years

UPCC Book Collections on MUSE: • Purchase Options • All books are offered as part of collections offered for purchase, with perpetual ownership/access rights • Current Collections (Titles from 2011, 2012, and publishing in 2013) • All available titles by calendar year • Subject-based collections by calendar year • Area Studies-based collections by calendar year • Archival Collections (Titles from 2010 and prior) • Complete, Subject-based, and Area Studies-based collections • Foundation Collections with bulk of backlist titles from launch of UPCC; Supplemental Collections including backlist from new publishers and newly digitized books from all publishers

UPCC Book Collections on MUSE: • Subscription Options • Current Subscription: Access to all books in UPCC/MUSE published in the current year and two previous years (2011/2012/2013) – content rolls off after 3 years • Archive Subscription: Access to all books in UPCC/MUSE published more than 3 years prior (2010 titles and earlier) – content accumulates over time • Tiered pricing based on journal collections pricing model • Unlimited usage/downloading/printing, DRM-free content • No perpetual access or ownership rights

UPCC Books on MUSE • Coming Soon: Single Title Purchasing • Partnership with YBP to facilitate ordering, integration with approval plans • Publishers opt-in to participate • Publisher select titles to be available for individual purchase • Publishers set prices for single title purchase • 63 publishers confirmed to date (>75% participation) • Expected to launch by end of Q1 2013
