Mixing Calcium Chloride and Phenol Red: A Chemical Reaction Experiment

In this experiment, we explore the reaction between calcium chloride and phenol red. By mixing these two substances in a sealed plastic bag, we aim to observe any physical or chemical changes. Safety precautions, including wearing goggles and gloves, are essential throughout the process. Participants will record observations such as visual changes, sounds, and tactile sensations. The experiment concludes with reflections on the hypothesis and any new questions that arise related to the chemical interaction of these compounds.

  1. Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble 2

  2. Question • What will happen if we mix the calcium chloride and the phenol red in a plastic bag?

  3. Hypothesis • If we mix the calcium chloride with the phenol red, then _____________________ because ____________________________

  4. Procedure • Continue wearing the safety goggle, gloves, and pulling hair back out of eyes. • Gather materials • Open the zip lock bag. Carefully pour the calcium chloride into the bag. Then add 30 drops of the phenol red. Quickly close the bag tightly. • Mix together by kneading the bag.

  5. Results • Record what you observe: see, hear, feel…

  6. Conclusion • I proved or disproved my hypothesis because _____________________________.

  7. New Questions • Can you think of a new question related to this • Or • Do you still have questions about this experiment that were not answered.

  8. Paragraph Frame • Record what you learned using the paragraph frame.

  9. Cleanup • Dispose of all baggies into the trash can near the door. • Wipe tables completely clean. • Do not remove gloves or goggles.
