  6. Types of Saws and Use • Crosscut saw • Used for cutting wood against the grain • Rip saw • Used for cutting wood parallel to the grain

  7. Safety • 1. Wear safety glasses • 2. Select proper saw • 3. Try to find a saw with comfortable handle • 4. Check the material for nails, knots, and other objects • 5. ONLY cut wood • 6. Hold the material being cut firmly

  9. Differences • Front face of the teeth on a rip saw are steeper than the crosscut saw • Kerf is typically wider on a cross cut saw than that of the rip saw

  10. Definitions • Rake is the angle of the front face of the tooth • Gullet is the space between the teeth where the dust is carried out • Fleamis the sharpened front face of the teeth • Kerf is the width of the front (area removed from the wood)

  11. Proper Use • 1. Choose the proper saw for the job • 2. Properly secure the material being cut with a wood clamp • 3. Securely hold the saw by the handle • 4. Place freehand beside the cut mark • 5. Hold your thumb up upright and press against the blade • 6. Start cutting CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY
