  1. Bell ringer: Explain what a musical score is. The Participative Experience and film part 2 THE PARTICIPATIVE EXPERIENCE AND FILM

  2. Cinematic realism makes it easy for us to identify with actors who represent our values • Ex: Forrest Gump, tom Hanks plays what seems to be a mentally defective person, but he is good at heart and positive in his thinking- Gump is an unlikely hero primarily because he is trusting, innocent and good hearted. FILM PART 2……… • Our Participation with film is often virtually involuntary. • Most people lose their sense of place and time in a movie • Ex: Black Orpheus (1958) shot in Rio, the intense colors, Latin music and the dynamics of the carnival produce an imaginary or virtual reality so intense and vital that actual reality seems dull by comparison

  3. Audience experience continued…. • We imagine ourselves as James Bond or swept of our feet in a romance film or happily ever after in a relationship. • This is also known as escapism films • Second- Participation with film is involuntary—highly engaging. • Third-Audience identifies with actors in film; film imitates life. • Forth- Films of value-classics-humanize us through their structural excellence • It may be that we naturally identify with heroes in films as we do in books • There are 3 kinds of participative experiences with film • One is not principally filmic in nature and is represented by a kind of self indulgence that depends upon self justifying fantasies

  4. THE FILM IMAGE • Watching a film closely can help us perceive much more intensely the visual worth of many of the images we experience outside film • For example, someone walking in a jaunty, jumpy fashion with his feet turned out, like Charlie Chaplin. • The starting point of film is the moving image. • Many experts agree that no other artistic medium can move us so deeply perhaps because the moving images imitate life so thoroughly. • *We rarely perceive static images except when viewing such things as paintings or phot0s • Movement occurs when the eye cannot see the black lines between frames The Participative Experience and Film 1. Participation with film is involuntary—highly engaging. 2. Audience identifies with actors in film; film imitates life. 3. Escapist films: we identify with actors to insure self importance and to avoid the despair of an all-too-painful reality. 4. Films of value-classics-humanize us through their structural excellence

  5. All the eye sees is the succession of frames minus the lines that divide them for the eye cannot perceive separate images or frames that move faster than 1/30 of a second This is called the language of the camera Many early filmmakers composed their films by adding single photographs to each other, frame by frame THE FILM IMAGE The still frame and the individual shot are the building block of film Because of the language many filmmakers both early and contemporary attempt to design each individual frame as careful as possible
