  3. Historical FactsGRIZZLEY BEAR FACTS-THE BEAR NECCESSITIES • Lewis & Clark killed 7 grizzly bears on their expedition • There was an estimated 50,000 grizzly bears at the time of the Lewis & Clark expedition • The grizzly bear has been designated “threatened” since 1975

  4. Basic FactsGRIZZLEY BEAR FACTS-THE BEAR NECCESSITIES • The grizzly bear is America’s largest carnivore • The grizzly bear stands up to 7 feet tall and weighs 300 to 800 pounds (average is 400 to 500 pounds) • Adult grizzly bears measure from 6 to 8 feet long

Habitat FactsGRIZZLEY BEAR FACTS-THE BEAR NECCESSITIES • The types of terrain grizzlies loves is alpine meadows, pine, cedar and fir forests, glacial lakes and fast flowing streams flowing into lush river valleys • The remaining bears are concentrated in and around Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness • Grizzly bears are solitary and live in densely vegetated and remote areas

Population FactsGRIZZLEY BEAR FACTS-THE BEAR NECCESSITIES • There are fewer than 1,000 to 1,100 grizzly bears in the lower 48 states • There are an estimated 400 to 600 grizzly bears in Yellowstone National Park • The number of adult breeding females has jumped from less than 30 in 1983 to over 100 today

  10. Enemy FactsGRIZZLEY BEAR FACTS-THE BEAR NECCESSITIES • The most significant natural enemy to grizzly bears is humans • 79% of grizzly bears that die prematurely do so at the hands of humans (Dr. David Mattson-U.S. Geological Survey’s Biological Resources Division).

  11. Recovery FactsGRIZZLEY BEAR FACTS-THE BEAR NECCESSITIES • There are substantial efforts being made to save the grizzly bear. Examples of this include efforts in Bitterroot Montana and Yellowstone National Park. These programs seek to re-introduce the grizzly bear into areas it once flourished in.
