  18. Hippocrates (500 B.C.) believed in the balance among the 4 elements and their associated humors.

  19. Examples of vegetables and herbs in Hippocrates’ 4 basic groups of plants.

  20. Dioscorides’ De Materia Medica - the most influential Western herbal of all time, a standard reference for >1500 years! Descriptions of 600+ herbs. Dioscorides was a Greek physician who lived in Rome and served Anthony and Cleopatra.

  21. Chinese herbalist Li Shi Zhen, 1590, 52 volume practical compendia, 2000 drugs, 1170 plants .

  22. John Girard was an English gardener and herbalist (1597) who wrote The Generall Historie of Plants. It includes descriptions of plants from around the world.

  23. John Parkinson wrote the largest herbal in English, published in 1640. The title “Paradisus in Sole” is a play on his name …Park..in…son.

  24. Culpepper’s The English Physitian was a very popular herbal, it contained astrological descriptions of almost 400 herbs. He believed in the Doctrine of Signatures and enraged physicians by his arrogant disregard for their learning.
