  2. What is a scanner? • It is an input device. • A scanner is like a copier, except that instead of making the copy onto paper, it creates a computer image file of the scanned image. Once the image is in this digital form, you can store it on your computer hard disk, manipulate it with a graphics design program, add it to your poster design, and more.

  3. What is a scanner? • Once the image is scanned, some kind of software is needed to convert the digital code to a viewable image. Most scanners come with basic software. There are many brands of imaging software available on the market.

  4. Types of scanner • Flatbed scanners, also called desktop scanners, are the most versatile and commonly used scanners. • Sheet-fed scanners are similar to flatbed scanners except the document is moved and the scan head is immobile. A sheet-fed scanner looks a lot like a small portable printer.

  5. Types of scanner • Handheld scanners use the same basic technology as a flatbed scanner, but rely on the user to move them instead of a motorized belt. This type of scanner typically does not provide good image quality. However, it can be useful for quickly capturing text. • Drum scanners are used by the publishing industry to capture incredibly detailed images.

  6. Objectives of scanner • To reduce the time spent on data input. • To capture pictures ,photo ,drawing or graphics directly. • To save images for future use.

  7. Applications • Image editing • OCR • Document management • Forms conversion • Utilities

  8. Scanning method (for flatbed scanners) • Place pictures on the scanner glass • Start scanner software • Select the area to be scanned • Choose the image types • Sharp the images • Set the images size • Save the scanned images
