  5. Being skillful at working in teams is something employers expect of you in the workplace and, increasingly, teamwork happens virtually. So see this as an opportunity to get one up on your future competition and, at the risk of being cliché, two brains are always better than one. Everyone learns more when we come together and learn as a team. There are two types of collaboration: synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous collaboration is communication that occurs at the same time. Things like instant messaging, chat, web conferences, or even just talking on the phone. Asynchronous collaboration, on the other hand, is communication that does not occur at the same time. Think online discussion boards or email. You are communicating synchronously and asynchronously everyday with your friends and your family, and now you’ll begin to do the same with your online classmates. As you begin this new venture, it will be important to keep a few things in mind in order to be an effective team member: First, be in the know. If you don’t do it now, get in the habit of checking your course email several times a week and replying to emails in a timely manner. Be there. Attend all meetings and while you are there, make sure you fully participate and give your best effort. Be clear. Communicate with your group both in meetings as well as with asynchronous communication. Be on time. When working on your part of the assignment, meet your deadlines. Be happy. Keep up that positive attitude and enjoy meeting students from all over the state and beyond. What is collaboration?
