  1. Ethiopia The Forgotten Meatball Vikram, Matthew, Prachi, Jack

  2. Background • Ancient kingdom from biblical times • They became involved in diplomacy between Great Britain, France and Italy • Italy had a wicked hankerin’ for Ethiopia

  3. Emperor menelik • Called the greatest of Ethiopia’s rulers • His rule brought about the reunification, modernization, and prominence in world affairs for his country • Smashing Bloke (Father of his people) • Intelligent • Made time to attend personally to every detail of administration • Won universal affection • Guaranteed justice to all • Declared all people were equal • Imported firearms from France • Assisted in commoner’s work, such as grass-cutting and church-building

  4. Treaty of Ucciali • Treaty of perpetual peace and friendship between Ethiopia and Italy, signed in 1889 • Had two versions – one in Italian, one in Amharic (language of Ethiopia) • Article XVII • The Italian text said that it was obligatory for the Emperor of Ethiopia to conduct all transactions with other nations through the Italian Government • The Italians interpreted this to mean that Ethiopia was a Protectorate of Italy • This effectively limited the independence of Ethiopia • Menelik did not agree, and a dispute arose • War between Italy and Ethiopia broke out in 1895

  5. Ethiopia goes hard • Ethiopian Army was larger than that of the Italians – 100,000 vs 17,000 • Eventually, Italy surrendered, but Ethiopia still killed them • Italians agreed to the Treaty of Addis Ababa, annulling the previous treaty and recognizing the absolute and complete independence of Ethiopia. • Other powers flocked to Addis Ababa to establish relations with Ethiopia, turning Addis Ababa as a regular diplomatic center
