  3. Some questions you might have about Outdoor School… • Where will your child stay? • What will child do? • What will child learn? • Who will be teaching their classes?

Dorms at Camp SEA Lab • The Camp SEA Lab residential programs are located in Aptos and La Selva Beach, CA • The site provides safe and direct access to the beach and thru private gate • Students and adults sleep in single gender dormitories with beds, bathrooms, and showers • Students are under adult supervision at all times

  5. Dining at Camp SEA Lab • Camp SEA Lab provides nutritious, kid-friendly meals! • Breakfast and dinner are served family-style in our large dining hall • Students make their own sack lunches and picnic together on camp grounds

  6. Program Activities • Sand Crab Monitoring • Plankton Studies • Sandy Beach Explorations • Squid Dissection • Kayaking in Elkhorn Slough

  7. Sand Crab Population Surveys Students study the Scientific Method as they learn about the lives of sand crabs, come up with a study question, and take sample data to answer their question.

  8. Plankton Race • Students learn about the adaptations of various plankton as they build their own models to complete in a plankton floating “race”. Plankton Lab • Plankton Studies • Students discuss the importance of plankton in the ocean and in our everyday lives as they explore this miniature world.

  9. Sandy Beach Studies • Sand Sculptures Students learn the anatomy of marine organisms by creating them in sand. • Sand Studies Students explore the features of sand and how wave action affects it. • Beach Exploration Students collect natural artifacts from the beach and sort them into teachable categories.

  10. Squid Dissection • Squid Anatomy Students study squid adaptations through discussion and dissection. • Squid Fisheries Students discuss squid fishing strategies and how squid behavior determines their management. • Calamari Feast • Staff prepare squid into calamari so as not to waste our resources and to allow students to learn about squid in a new way.

  11. Kayaking in Elkhorn Slough • Kayak Lessons Experienced kayak guides instruct students in paddle usage. • Slough Exploration Kayak guides take students on a tour as they learn about the marine animals that call the slough their home.

  12. What will students learn? Students will: • learn about some of the amazing creatures and features in the ocean • learn how the ocean affects life on Earth, through climate, food, and recreation • learn how humans affect the ocean’s health • learn how to protect and preserve our ocean through conservation and stewardship at home • learn what it takes to become a marine scientist

  13. Who are the instructors? Camp SEA Lab Naturalists… • … are hired based on their experience with students in informal educational settings and in marine science • … have current CPR/First Aid certifications, have passed fingerprint checks, and are trained on program safety policies • … deliver meaningful lessons for each class and student • … demonstrate the desire to share their love of the natural world to inspire new generations!

  14. Coastal weather is highly unpredictable. We recommend bringing a waterproof jacket and clothes that can be worn in layers. We hike rain or shine! When packing, remember to keep it light. Your child will have to carry whatever they bring. We suggest labeling items with your child’s name. • Lunch for the 1st day • 1 sleeping bag & pillow • 1 pair pajamas • 1 pair closed-toe shoes • 1 pair sandals or water shoes • 3 pairs pants, shorts, or sweats • 1-2 jackets, sweaters, or sweatshirts • 1 rain jacket or poncho • 4 shirts • 4 pairs underwear and socks • 1 plastic bag for dirty clothes • 1 bottle for water • 1 toilet kit to include: sunscreen, comb/brush, towel, shampoo, • toothbrush & toothpaste, soap & deodorant • Camera and film (optional) • Don’t worry, you will receive this information from your child’s teacher What to bring to Outdoor School

What Camp SEA Lab expects… • Camp SEA Lab Outdoor School provides a unique opportunity for students to learn in the outdoors, however we like to stress that this experience is still to be considered school. We hold high, but not unattainable expectations for participation and behavior by all students. Please take a moment to discuss the following expectations with your child prior to camp. • Camp GuidelinesDorm Guidelines • Be respectful to everyone Respect chaperone’s authority • Work together Respect everyone’s space and property • Be on time The only dorm you may go into is your own • Protect living things Wait for a chaperone before entering your dorm Leave them in their homes After lights out, stay inside and keep quiet • Don’t throw rocks, sticks or sand Don’t roughhouse, argue, or fight • Stay in camp boundaries No put-downs, foul language or dirty jokes • Walk, don’t run Keep your dorm & restrooms clean • Use the trashcans, No graffiti Quiet Hours: 9:30pm – 7am
