  4. How Does Counting Work? In our number system there are 10 digits available, namely 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. After nine comes ten of course, but there is no symbol for ten. This is where our place value structure comes in and now the number of tens and ones are recorded using 2 digits, one in the tens column and the second in the ones column.

  5. How Does Counting Work? For example, the number twenty eight is written using digits as 28. This means there are 2 tens and 8 ones. Similarly, once 99 is reached, another column is required and now the number of hundreds are recorded as well.
