  1. What Are the Precautions You Should Take Before Breast Cancer Surgery? Treatment for breast cancer can be a very taxing procedure for the patient, which challenges their mental and emotional strength apart from the physical challenges involved before and after the surgery. Let us look at some of the most important things that you need to do before you go in for surgery for breast cancer. Let us look at the precautions you need to take before you go in for the surgery. Of course you should discuss this with the doctor and follow their advice verbatim. Different people undergoing this surgery will require different precautions. For instance, complete mastectomy requires general anesthesia whereas, if only a small tumor is to be removed it can also be done with local anesthesia. If you are going to undergo surgery under general anesthesia then eat nothing after midnight the night before your procedure, and avoid drinking anything as well. Any drugs you use on a regular basis should be taken with a sip or two of water at the normal time. Diabetes, heart disease, and other disorders should be discussed with a primary care physician for more guidance. If you are using Coumadin or another blood thinner, make it a point to inform the surgeon. Completely stay away from aspirin or its products for 10 days before the surgery. In fact, you should avoid any kind of blood thinners during this duration. You should wear comfortable clothes because at the hospital you will be put into garments meant for surgery. You should also have a responsible adult with you, not just for driving you home after the surgery for breast cancer, but also make sure that all the paper work and your belongings are handled properly. If you take these precautions then surgery for breast cancer need not be such a harrowing experience. Of course every woman will react differently to this situation, but it is best to keep yourself in a positive frame of mind in order to ascertain the best results from the treatment.
