This presentation will: • Give a brief overview of the structure, layout, purpose of the 1999 Vision Document • Identify companion documents that act as a support to the Vision Document • Provide an index of specific examples created by teachers and categorized by grade and outcome framework area • Encourage dialogue, reflection and planning for future curriculum development aligned with Provincial outcomes • Inform whereabouts of online versions of documents discussed Halifax Regional School Board

  3. What is the purpose of the Visions Document? Halifax Regional School Board

  4. Purpose This provincial document addresses the need for teachers to engage students in classroom activities that meet curriculum outcomes and achieve essential graduation learnings through the integration of appropriate information technologies. Halifax Regional School Board

  5. Purpose It provides the foundation for the integration of information technology within the public school system. Halifax Regional School Board

  6. It assists teachers in integrating technology within curriculum while considering: • access to technology • age and skill level of students • the rapid changes in technology Halifax Regional School Board

What are some examples of hardware mentioned in the Vision document? • Hardware includes computers and peripherals as well as: • audio listening centres, audio cassette recorders • projectors (film, overhead, LCD etc.) • television, radio, cameras • telephone and fax • audio and video recording and editing equipment • science probes • calculators • etc. Halifax Regional School Board

  11. What is technology integration? Technology integration is the effective use of technology to enhance student learning and improve student achievement across the curriculum. Halifax Regional School Board

  12. What’s in the Vision Document? It is divided into five IT-based learning outcome areas: • Basic Operations and Concepts (BOC) • Productivity Tools and Software (PTS) • Communications Technology (CT) • Research, Problem Solving, and Decision Making (RPSD) • Social, Ethical, and Human Issues (SEHI) Halifax Regional School Board

  14. Basic Operations and Concepts (BOC) In these outcomes, students will learn to operate a range of information technologies safely and efficiently. Halifax Regional School Board

Productivity Tools and Software (PTS) In these outcomes students learn to select IT efficiently and to perform tasks such as • exploring ideas • collecting data • manipulating data • discovering patterns and relationships • solving problems • representing learning Halifax Regional School Board

  16. Communications Technology (CT) Students use technologies in an interactive way to support collaboration and sharing through communication. Halifax Regional School Board

  17. Research, Problem Solving, and Decision Making (RPSD) Students rationalize their use of IT through • organization • reasoning • evaluation Halifax Regional School Board

  18. Social, Ethical, and Human Issues (SEHI) Students are encouraged through the use of IT to: • pursue personal and social good • build and improve their learning environments • foster stronger relationships with peers and others Halifax Regional School Board

Assessment and technology integration Effective technology integration: • enhances the delivery of the curriculum • must be aligned with effective assessment and opportunities for learning experiences • allows students to demonstrate and apply their skills and knowledge Halifax Regional School Board

Assessment and technology integration Ongoing assessment is vital in order to: • ensure that students have the skills and knowledge needed to use the technology effectively • provide teachers with data to inform instructional decisions and student learning • ensure that outcomes from the Vision Document are being met Halifax Regional School Board

  24. Making it Real! The following six activities can be used for opening up dialogue, reflection and planning Halifax Regional School Board

  25. Opening up dialogue and reflection 2. Start with the Visions document. Do you see any outcomes that you could integrate into lessons/units you are doing? 1. Think of a lesson or unit that you have recently done. Look at the Visions document and identify technology outcomes that could be incorporated into that curriculum area.   26. 3. Skim over some of the examples in the Illustrative Examples document. Are there any ideas that you would like to try? 4. Think of some of your lessons or units. If a new edition of the Illustrative Examples was being published tomorrow, what example(s) could you add? Halifax Regional School Board

  27. 5. How could you pool together a collection of illustrative examples that are going on at your school? How could this be useful? 6. Where can you find support in incorporating the Visions document into the curriculum?
