  2. Over 2000 years ago, the indigenous people crossed theBering Straits on foot to settle in the Americas, a pathway to California. These indigenous people eventually included: The Chumash & The Yurok

  3. By the 1500s, the Spanish explorers came to California to seek fortune. Hernando Cortes, one of the first conquistadors, claimed land for Spain that included California.

  4. In 1769, Fr. Serra established the first mission in San Diego, the beginning of Spanish influence in Southern California. The California Native Americans learned how to farm and raise cattle. Father Serra converted them to Christianity. Fr. Junipero Serra Mission San Diego
