  4. LESSON 9 CONNECTIONS • Compare/contrast the Schmidt family’s actions with what we have learned about the use of God’s name. Trying to influence God by certain actions is superstition. But if they were sincere in their worship and prayer, that’s using God’s name correctly. Still, they forgot to thank God after he had answered their prayers.

  9. THE SABBATH DAY What does THE SABBATH mean?

  10. THE OLD TESTAMENT SABBATH • Read Exodus 20:8-11. How was the Old Testament Sabbath Day similar to the seventh day of creation week? God rested on the seventh day. He wanted his people to do the same.

  11. THE OLD TESTAMENT SABBATH 2. Read Numbers 28:9,10. How did the Old Testament believers worship God? The priests offered sacrifices that God had commanded them to.

  12. THE OLD TESTAMENT SABBATH • In Colossians 2:16,17, we are told that the observance of the Sabbath Day was “a shadow of the things there were to come” (Jesus). In what way did the sacrifices of lambs, goats, and bulls point ahead to Jesus? The animal blood pointed ahead to the blood Jesus, the Lamb of God, would shed on the cross for their sins.

  13. THE OLD TESTAMENT SABBATH • Explain this statement: Jesus fulfilled the Sabbath rest by giving his people true rest for their souls. Those who believe in Jesus’ sacrifice find rest from the burden of sin on their souls.

  14. THE OLD TESTAMENT SABBATH • During Old Testament times, Jesus had not yet lived and died. How were Old Testament believers forgiven? By faith in the promised, coming Messiah.

  15. THE OLD TESTAMENT SABBATH • Evaluate this statement: Every time Old Testament believers heard God’s Word, they would find rest for their souls. God’s Word reminded believers of the salvation the coming Messiah would accomplish for them.

  16. THE OLD TESTAMENT SABBATH • The sacrifices of Old Testament believers were regular reminders of the spiritual peace and rest they had through the coming Savior. How did Old Testament believers keep the Sabbath Day holy? They set the day aside as a day of rest for their bodies and souls. They remembered the past and God’s promise.

THE OLD TESTAMENT SABBATH • A famous coach insisted that his players arrive at least an hour before each game, lie on the their benches in the locker room, and do nothing but think how their victory would feel. In what ways does this illustrate God’s Old Testament Sabbath? Specific time – physically rested – mentally/spiritually focused

  18. KEY POINT #1 For Old Testament believers, the Sabbath meant… rest for their bodies and souls.

  19. THE SABBATH TODAY • Colossians 2:16,17 explains why God no longer demands that we observe the Sabbath Day the same way he demanded Old Testament people to observe it. The ceremonial laws were shadows of what was to come. From the outline of a shadow, we learn something about the body that is coming. Why are these Old Testament shadows no longer necessary for New Testament believers? Because the body, Christ our Savior, has come. Why look at shadows when we can see the body itself? Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies for us.

  20. THE SABBATH TODAY • Read Matthew 12:8. Why can God give the laws of the Sabbath and also remove them? As Lord of the Sabbath, he has the authority to give and abolish any such laws.

  21. THE SABBATH TODAY • Read Matthew 11:28. What makes us spiritually weary and burdened? Battles against temptation, burdens of our sin and guilt, & misguided attempts to earn God’s favor by keeping his law.

  22. THE SABBATH TODAY • What is the rest that Jesus promises to give us? We have the true and lasting Sabbath—forgiveness of sins and eternal life.

  23. THE SABBATH TODAY • What parts of our worship services point us to the rest we have for our souls? Confession & Absolution (forgiveness). God’s Word when it talks about forgiveness. Lord’s Supper offers & gives forgiveness.

  24. THE SABBATH TODAY • Agree or Disagree: It doesn’t matter when we worship or have our church services. Agree. For New Testament Christians, the 3rd Commandment doesn’t demand we worship on Saturday or any specific day. Instead it points us to God’s Word, which brings us true rest for our souls. But then we’ll want to hear God’s Word in church on a regular basis.

  25. THE SABBATH TODAY • An Air Force pilot…read his wife’s letter so often that it became tattered and torn. Compare that letter and the Word of God, which comforts us who find ourselves surround by the enemy (the devil and his followers). God has given us a beautiful letter—his Word, which assures us of his love, protection and victory. We will want to return to it again and again for the spiritual rest we have in Jesus.

  26. KEY POINT #2 For believers today, the Sabbath means… rest for our souls through Jesus.

  27. WHAT DOES “THE SABBATH” MEAN? • For Old Testament believers, the Sabbath meant rest for their bodies and souls. • For believers today, the Sabbath means rest for our souls through Jesus. SUMMARY The Sabbath means rest for the soul.
