Understanding the Deciduous Forest Ecosystem

This overview explores the abiotic and biotic factors of deciduous forests, characterized by an average temperature of 50°F and annual rainfall between 30 to 60 inches. The region supports a diverse ecosystem with rolling hills, four distinct seasons, fertile soils, and a variety of trees such as oak, beech, and birch. Adaptations among plants and animals, including hibernation and nutrient absorption, are crucial for survival. However, human activities like farming and urban development threaten these ecosystems, affecting wildlife habitats.

  1. Deciduous Forest By: Kyle Kysor

  2. Abiotic Factors • Average temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit • Average rainfall per year ranges from 30 to 60 inches a year • The latitude ranges from 23 degrees north to 38 degrees south • It is made up of rolling hills.

  3. Abiotic Factors • It has four seasons spring, summer, autumn and winter • Mild Summers 70 degrees June – August • Cool Winters Just below freezing start in December • The soil is very fertile

  4. Biotic Factors • The leafy trees shed leaves every year due to lack of water reserves. • Evergreens keep their leaves during the winter because their leaves are smaller which looses less water.

  5. Biotic Factors • Broad leafed deciduous trees and some of the evergreen trees make up the forest. • Such as the ash, oak, lime, beech, birch, and northern arrow wood. • Wildflowers such as oxlip, bluebells, painted trillium, and primrose.

  6. Adaptations • The animals adapt to the weather by hibernating during winter. • Other three seasons they live off the land. • They try the plants for food. • They use trees for shelter water supply and sometimes food. • They have camouflage that looks like the ground.

  7. Adaptations • Plants adapt by leaning toward the sun and soaking up the nutrients in the ground.

  8. Interactions • The insects and herbivores live off the vegetation. • The herbivores provide food for the carnivores.

  9. Interactions

  10. Human Interactions • A lot of deciduous forests lost land due to farms and towns. • Although people try protecting the forest others are poaching the animals. • Animals loose homes when people build their houses. • They want the land because it is fertile.
