Digital collections that capture and preserve the intellectual output of a single or multi-Institution community - Crow, 2002 Currently used by leading academic and research institutions worldwide for providing improved access to their research publications What is an IR Institute/Organization Repository

Objectives of the Project: • To design and develop an Institutional Repository (IR) of scholarly publications of LIS faculty and researchers of Karnataka State using open source software. • To extend wider access to contributions made by teachers, researcher in LIS to promote teaching research and other activities. • To develop an inventory of scholarly publications contributed by LIS teachers, researchers etc. in LIS departments of Karnataka State. • To design an end user interface for browsing, navigating through searching the Institutional Repository; • To workout and adopt Metadata Standard for Bibliographic Description of the IR collection. • To examine Intellectual Property Right (IPR) issues involved in this regard.

Work done so far • Selection and Installation of Institutional Repository (IR) Software i.e., DSpace version 1.6. • Selection and Installation of Supporting software to IR i.e., Linux Version 11, Java, Tomcat, PostgreSQL. • Identification of scholarly publications published by LIS professionals working in different LIS departments of Karnataka State particularly teachers and researchers through LISA, EBSCO, Emerald databases and also browsing printed journals and conference proceedings. • Construction of Project Advisory Group.

Contd….. • Collection of various sources of publications such as Journal articles, conference papers (from regional, national and international publications), books reviews, abstracts etc., contributed by the teachers and researchers. • Identification, selection and acquisition of contributors and their publications through formal and informal contacts. • Identifying, selecting, copying and downloading of scholarly publications from Open source journals i.e., DOAJ, institutional and organizations publications like NISCAIR, DESIDOC etc. • Development and adoption of Metadata Standards for bibliographical description for visibility, standardization, better and wider access IR publications.

Work remains to be done • Scanning and Digital conversion of contents of collected scholarly publications. • Identify, selection and building of remaining part of scholarly publication from various sources including from individual contributors. • Finding the appropriate Metadata standards and Structure for Organization & access to IR collection. • Identifying, books chapters, books reviews, abstracts etc., contributed by the teachers and researchers.

  13. Contd….. • Design and development of appropriate user interface for better access to IR collections. This work will be carried out after examine the existing user interface followed by national and international IRs in consultation of Project Advisory Ground and Experts. • Structuring of the whole database of scholarly publication through Demonstration, User feedback and Modification.

  14. Reasons for Project work was delayed • Delay in communication from the University • Procedural delay in appointment of project fellow. Since the appointment of project fellow involves the following process: • Constitution and approval of the selection committee. • Wider advertisement in leading newspapers etc., • Lack of suitable candidate during the first stage of advertisement • Scheduling of date of conducting interview • Getting the clearance from selected project fellow

Contd…. • Delay in communication of information about receipt of financial aid from UGC • In-house official delay to release of grants under different heads • Delay in responding to any request from the University • Delay in timely response by the authors in providing details of contributions and copies of publications
