A tight timeline March 17, 2004 A new Okanagan College and UBC Okanagan are announced by Premier Gordon Campbell Sept. 1, 2005 The new college will open its doors. Four campuses: Salmon Arm, Penticton, Vernon, Kelowna
What we are • Four campuses, and several associated centres, with proud history of serving students and our communities • Approximately 3,600 students in addition to over 30,000 Continuing Education registrations • A variety of programs, including university transfer, vocational, developmental, diploma and certificate
What we will become • Larger: 1,000 more full-time students by 2009-10, beginning with growth of 190 students in 2005-06. • An integrated part of the learning opportunities in this region, working closely with UBC Okanagan and our K-12 partners • An increasingly important part of the regional economy
What we will not be • Just the Okanagan College of a decade ago • The region has changed: • Learning needs • Economic, social and cultural development needs • Community expectations • Post-secondary education has changed
Our Goal • More access for more people to more quality programs throughout the region
Processes to get us there • By end of June: • Examine what we do, what we are (underway and nearly complete) • Consult with communities we serve • Consult with internal community • Develop plan, communicate it, gather feedback • Implement transition plan by September 2005, longer range plan by 2010
Who is involved? • College Transition Team - Led by Jim Hamilton • Regional Advisory Committee - Chaired by Norm Embree • Public Administrator - Dr. Peter Meekison • Partners: • OUC - Dr. Peter Ricketts • UBC Okanagan - Dr. Barry McBride
You can help • Identify community and regional needs and expectations • Programs • Services • Help create our vision • Through public forums, roundtables, our website forum and the Regional Advisory Committee
Together we can create a College that builds on 40 years of excellent service to the region, honours the close connection with our communities, and takes its place as one of the best post-secondary institutions of its type in Canada and the world
