  2. Cynically- sneering, disinclined to recognize goodness, contempt for human nature (derived from the ancient Greek school of philosophy which held that virtue is the only good in that its essence lies in independence and self control)

  3. Acrid – sharp and bitter to the taste and smell; sharp in speech

  4. Cordon- a cord or ribbon bestowed as an award; a line of sentries or policemen to prevent access to an area

  5. Ululating – to hoot or screech; howling or wailing

  6. Elephantine- very large and clumsy

  7. Crepitation– to crackle snap; the sound detected in the lungs by auscultation in certain diseases ; crackling of bones

  8. Epaulettes- shoulder ornament, esp. on a uniform
